Different types of Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are of different types based on their appearance (shapes and sizes). What’s common among all is the pain and discomfort caused.
Based on the difference in the shapes and sizes of their appearance, varicose veins are of different types. If you suspect that you suffer from varicose veins, please read the below-listed types of varicose veins and their characteristics.
- Spider veins
- Reticular varicose veins
- Varicose veins Trunk
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Trophic ulcers
- Spider Veins: These are damaged small veins that appear on legs and face. Compared to other types of varicose veins, spider veins are less painful and harmful. This condition is often ignored by people and those who go for treatment mostly do it for cosmetic reasons.
- In appearance, spider veins look like thin lines, webs and branches. They are usually seen in colours purple, blue or red.
- Reticular Varicose Veins: Reticular varicose veins are also known as feeder veins or blue veins. Compared to other types of varicose veins, these are smaller in size and are often seen on the backside of legs closer to the knee area. In some cases, it can be seen in other areas of the legs and face. It often looks like a web on the surface of the skin.
- Varicose veins trunk: These veins are also seen on the surface of the skin but are thick and knobbly. They are often long and quite unpleasant to look at.
- Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI): This happens due to the ineffective functioning of veins in the leg and venous walls. As a result, there is a reduced rate of blood flow from legs to the heart.
- Trophic Ulcers: This condition occurs due to external trauma caused to various parts of the body. The affected body part is usually weak due to illness, vascular inefficiency or because of afferent nerve fibre loss.
Causes of Varicose Veins
Varicose veins occur when the valves of lower veins fail to close which alters the blood flow. Another reason is when the valves lose elasticity due to ageing.
In women varicose veins commonly occur during pregnancy, pre-menstruation or menopause. Obesity/overweight is also another reason for varicose veins due to increased pressure on the veins.
Standing or sitting for a long period of time is also a cause for varicose veins as it interrupts the blood flow and weakening of the veins.

Endovenous Laser Treatment
Endovenous laser treatment is a relatively novel procedure done under the influence of local anaesthesia on legs. In this treatment, a laser fibre enters the affected veins and energy is discharged evenly into the wall of the blood vessel causing it to
collapse. The technique is called ablation. Due to this, the blood flow is forced through the nearby blood vessel improving the blood circulation. The time taken for overall procedure is about 30 to 40 minutes.
Benefits of Endovenous Laser Ablation
- No traces or stitches
- Excellent cosmetic & aesthetic results
- No hospitalization
- Faster recovery
- Quicker results
